Annotation:
Former Mafia hitman Frankie Machianno (once known as Frankie Machine for his ruthless efficiency) is happily retired from his life of crime. In his 60s, the amiable Frankie is running a bait shop in San Diego when his past catches up with him. After his ex-wife, daughter, and girlfriend are threatened and Frankie barely evades an attempt on his life, he goes underground, simultaneously seeking his adversary in the present and thinking back to his unsavory past,, trying to remember whom he wronged and what they want. Though Don Winslow has never achieved the name recognition of Elmore Leonard (mostly because he has written only four crime novels), his work is as good or better, and crime aficionados revere him for lean, magnetic prose and his thoughtful, gritty, and utterly compelling characters.
